The thing people should get out of their heads is the notion that oppression is about love and hate, when it’s about power and superiority. You can love someone and still consider them your inferior with less rights than you. I love my cat but I wouldn’t support someone who tried to give my cat voting rights. So I totally believe the people who say “I don’t support gay marriage but I still love my gay friends!” Yes, I’m sure you do, because they’re like pets to you. And that can be a very genuine love, but it doesn’t make your beliefs any less oppressive.
